Fukushima Fear: Radiation rises, 'nobody really knows how to dodge disaster'
There's a worrying spike in radiation at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Readings from a water storage tank have rocketed six-and-a-half-thousand times higher in two days. A powerful typhoon swept through Japan earlier this week, causing toxic waters to be released into a drainage ditch leading to the Pacific Ocean. It's compounded what's been a worsening situation at the plant in recent months, as Irina Galushko explains. READ MORE: http://on.rt.com/5ax3ck

Post-accident fish auctions in Fukushima
Auctions for fish caught off Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture took place on Saturday for the first time since the March 2011 nuclear accident.
The bidding was held at 4 wholesale markets in Fukushima Prefecture.
More than 100 wholesalers gathered at 6 AM at the central wholesale market in Iwaki, where 400 kilograms of marine products were put up for bid. The seafood represented 30 percent of the entire haul from Friday's test fishing off the prefecture.
No radioactive materials were found in any of the samples that included octopuses and horse crabs as well as the local specialty, greeneye fish.
The greeneye sold for 800 yen, or about 8 dollars, per kilogram. That is 20 to 30 percent higher than the same type of fish from other prefectures.
A wholesaler, Yuji Kanari, said he is very happy as he had been looking forward to dealing with locally-caught fish again.
The marine products were then delivered to retailers across Fukushima Prefecture.
The fish have been put on sale with a certificate showing radiation test results.
At a fish store in Iwaki, a man who bought horse crabs said he came in the morning as he was anxious to eat local food.

Abe to address rumors about seafood contamination...
Abe then visited a kitchen utility factory that resumed production in a former no-entry zone in Minamisoma City.
Abe told reporters that fishing has resumed, although on an experimental basis, and tests have found all seafood to be safe. However, he said the fact remains that fishermen and farmers in Fukushima are suffering from rumors with no factual basis. Abe said he will continue to work to disseminate accurate information that Fukushima's fishery and agricultural products are safe.

DPJ wants TEPCO split up, decommission body set up
Japan's main opposition party has drafted a proposal to divide the company that operates the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and create a new body that would specialize in scrapping reactors.
The Democratic Party of Japan, or DPJ, compiled a proposal to reform the structure of Tokyo Electric Power Company. It is designed to ensure an unchanging procedure for decommissioning reactors at the plant.
The DPJ says the radioactive wastewater situation at the plant is worsening. The party says there is a limit to having TEPCO singlehandedly address the aftermath of the nuclear accident because the process has huge costs. It adds the current approach might face a deadlock sooner or later.
The DPJ suggests TEPCO be split up and a new organization established to focus on decommissioning reactors, including tackling radioactive water.
The group says the state and TEPCO should jointly fund the decommissioning body. The new organization would consist of nuclear engineers from the public and private sectors and take charge of scrapping reactors not only at the Fukushima Daiichi but also at other plants, if need be.
The DPJ will present the proposal to the current session of the Diet after deciding how much stake the state and TEPCO should hold in the new body.
Meanwhile, at a plenary Lower House session on Thursday, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe voiced his objection to forcing TEPCO to go bankrupt.
He said that if the utility is liquidated according to the corporate rehabilitation law, it may not be possible to properly compensate those affected by the nuclear accident or supply electricity at the current level.
Abe said TEPCO should, as a private company, steadily implement compensation, decommission reactors and address radioactive water.
He added his government will not leave the matters to TEPCO but will take a leadership role and fulfill its responsibilities.
