Barack Obama inspires Kenyan half-brother Malik Obama to run for office in Africa

As US President Barack Obama begins his second term in the White House, half way across the world his half-brother Malik has been inspired by his relative to launch a political career of his own, with his eye on elections in Kenya in March. Malik, 54, is running for governorship of the rural Siaya county as an independent candidate.

【3月11日 AFP】「世界最強の権力者」を異母弟に持つマリク・オバマ（Malik Obama）氏は、弟の威光も及ばなかったのか、ケニアで最近行われた州知事選挙で無残に大敗を喫した。

バラク・オバマ（Barack Obama）米大統領の異母兄にあたるマリク・オバマ氏（54）が、西ケニア地元地区の州知事選で獲得した得票数は、最終当選者と約14万票差の、わずか2792票だった。

エコノミスト・金融アナリストを自称する、身長180センチを優に超える大男のオバマ氏は、地元のへき地には、米国政府とのつてを利用して発展をもたらしたいと選挙遊説中にAFPに語った。

「わが住民には米国政府に直結したつてがあるのに、地元のつながりだけで満足するはずがないだろう」（オバマ氏）

「ここにもオバマ、そこにもオバマ」（Obama here, Obama there）をスローガンに掲げて選挙運動を行っていたオバマ氏は、マクドナルド（McDonald's）のようなチェーン店を地元で展開して、ゆくゆくは大統領選に立候補したいと夢を語っていた。

オバマ氏は10日、記者からの電話には応じなかった。有権者にわずかなお金を握らせて集会に参加させるのは、ケニアの選挙戦ではよく使われる手だが、それを威勢よく拒否してみせたことが招いた結果に衝撃を受けていたのかもしれない。

一方でオバマ大統領は、オランダ・ハーグ（Hague）の国際刑事裁判所（International Criminal Court、ICC）に訴追されている、ケニアの次期大統領に選出されたウフル・ケニヤッタ（Uhuru Kenyatta）副首相（51）への対応をめぐって、外交上の問題に発展する恐れに直面している。
