公開日: 2012/04/01
The nation has once again been plunged into mourning. Glowing tributes are being paid to a woman who has been at the forefront in campaigning for health rights, peaceful co-existence and tolerance among different communities. "colorful, sweet, determined" are just but some of the words those who knew Mary Onyango, the departed Vice Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Intergration Commission, used to describe her. She passed on early this morning after a twelve - year battle with cancer at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu. President Mwai Kibaki led a host of other leaders in mourning the death of the commissioner whom he described as a peace crusader. Willis Raburu reports on the life and times of Mary Onyango

Kisumu

Kisumu is a port city in western Kenya at 1,131 m (3,711 ft), with a population of 394,684 (2009 census). It is the third largest city in Kenya, the principal city of western Kenya, the immediate former capital of Nyanza Province and the headquarters of Kisumu County. It has a municipal charter but no city charter. It is the largest city in Nyanza region and second most important city after Kampala in the greater Lake Victoria basin.
The port was founded in 1901 as the main inland terminal of the Uganda Railway and named Port Florence. Although trade stagnated in the 1980s and 1990s, it is again growing around oil exports.
Kisumu literally means a place of barter trade "sumo". The city has "Friendship" status with Cheltenham, UK and "sister city" status with Roanoke, Virginia and Boulder, Colorado, USA.

Trivia
U.S. President Barack Obama's father is from the village of Nyang'oma Kogelo, 37 miles or 60 km from Kisumu.[9]
