A very interesting and clear video of how wind turbine foundations for the Thorntonbank Windfarm were installed.

In this film, you can see a piling template being used to drive piles for the Thorntonbank offshore windfarm, located 28 km off the Belgian coast. This piling template was designed by TWD on request of GeoSea.
In total 196 piles were driven at 49 locations, with four piles at each location. The piles have a diameter of 1.8m, and range between 21 and 49.5 m long. Two moon pools were made inside jack-up barge Buzzard, allowing all four piles to be driven from the same barge location.
During transport, the piling template was docked against the hull of the Buzzard, and suspended by four winches. At the piling location, the piling template was lowered to the seabed, and the piles were upended and inserted into the sleeves of the template. After this, the piles were driven to target depth.
To accommodate for easy insertion of the piles, the template sleeves are funnel-shaped. Furthermore, the template had to be positioned stable on the seabed floor, which was achieved with four “mud mat” bearing structures.
On several locations the seabed had such drastic level differences that the template could not be completely lowered onto the seabed. In such instances, at least one “mud mat” of the template was lowered onto the seabed, while the other parts of the template were suspended by the winches.
