MUMBAI, Maharashtra, India
JSW Energy Ltd. (JSW) and Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd. (JPVL) executed an acquisition deal worth about US$1.8 billion for two of three power-generating facilities listed on a Sept. 24, binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The 100% acquisition of two plants was executed in Mumbai, in the district of Maharashtra, India, on Nov. 15.
JSW purchased two facilities located in Himachal Pradesh, in the upper northwest region that borders Indian states Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west, Haryana and Uttarakhand to the south and the country of China to the east. The properties include 300-MW Baspa II Hydro Electric Plant and 1,091-MW Karcham Wangtoo Hydro Electric Plant.
Karcham Wangtoo continues to produce power since coming online in 2011, as does Baspa II, which was commissioned in 2003. Karcham Wangtoo and Baspa II have an estimated life of more than 29 and 37 years respectively and are extendable to 20 more years, according to published reports.
The two hydro plants will be operated under Himachal Baspa Power Co. Ltd. (HBPCL) as a going concern through a scheme of arrangement “subject to mutually agreed adjustments, and the closing is subject fulfillment of conditions precedent by the parties,” according to JSW.
The 500-MW Bina Thermal Power Plant in Madhya Pradesh is the remaining project listed on the MoU, but there is no readily available information on its purchase status.
Based in Mumbai on the central east coast of India, JSW is part of the JSW Group. The group is controlled by O.P. Jindal Group out of Haryana, about 500 miles away in north India. O.P. Jindal Group is a global conglomerate worth US$18 billion, according to the company.
Prior to purchasing the two hydro plants, JSW acquired its only hydro project in July 2007 through a competitive bidding process. The company is developing a 240-MW run-of-river hydroelectric project at Kutehr on the upper reaches of the Ravi River in Himachal Pradesh, according to published reports.
The bulk of JSW holdings are in thermal power projects.
JSW said it has an existing operational capacity of 3,140 MW from thermal power and gained 1,391 MW of hydroelectric power from the HBPCL agreement. The combined total will bring its energy portfolio to 4,531 MW. Published reports indicate JSW has projects worth 8,630 MW under implementation and in the development phase throughout several states in India.
The Nov. 15 acquisition allows JSW to advance in achieving its goal of owning plants that have a total of 12,000 MW of power generation capacity by 2025, according to the company.

At the station, the water powers four 250 MW Francis turbine-generators before it is sent back into the Sutlej via a 1.2 km (0.75 mi) long tailrace tunnel. The difference in elevation between the dam and the power station affords a gross hydraulic head of 298 m (978 ft). Water not diverted by the dam is sent over the spillway and down the normal course of the river. The main spillway is along the crest of the dam and is controlled by six radial gates.[5] Just upstream of the dam is the 300 MW Baspa II Hydroelectric Plant and downstream of the Karcham Wangtoo is the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Dam.[3]=====================================

The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples:
1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea.
2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely automated process done without human intervention.

MULTI – the world’s first rope-free elevator system

http://www.thyssenkrupp-elevator.com/fileadmin/tpl/images/wortmarke_neu.gif
ThyssenKrupp places linear motors in elevator cabins, transforming conventional elevator transportation in vertical metro systems. MULTI elevator technology increases transport capacities and efficiency while reducing the elevator footprint and peak loads from the power supply in buildings. Several cabins in the same shaft moving vertically and horizontally will permit buildings to adopt different heights, shapes, and purposes. The first MULTI unit will be in tests by 2016
Presented today, MULTI is ThyssenKrupp’s latest offering in its extensive repertoire of elevator technologies, representing a landmark revolution in the elevator industry and a new and efficient transport solution for mid and high-rise buildings. Now, the long-pursued dream of operating multiple cabins in the same elevator shaft is made possible by applying the linear motor technology of the magnetic levitation train Transrapid to the elevator industry. MULTI will transform how people move inside buildings, just as the recently introduced ThyssenKrupp’s ACCEL, which also applies the same linear motor technology, is set to transform mobility between short distances in cities and airports.
In a manner similar to a metro system operation, the MULTI design can incorporate various self-propelled elevator cabins per shaft running in a loop, increasing the shaft transport capacity by up to 50% making it possible to reduce the elevator footprint in buildings by as much as 50%.
Using no cables at all, a multi-level brake system, and inductive power transfers from shaft to cabin, MULTI requires smaller shafts than conventional elevators, and can increase a building’s usable area by up to 25%, considering that, depending on the size of the building, current elevator-escalator footprints can occupy up to 40% of the building’s floor space. The overall increase in efficiency also translates into a lower requirement for escalators and additional elevator shafts, resulting in significant construction cost savings as well as a multiplication of rent revenues from increased usable space.
The significant extra space available is only one of MULTI’s advantages. Although the ideal building height for MULTI installations starts at 300 metres, this system is not constrained by a building’s height. Building design will no longer be limited by the height or vertical alignment of elevator shafts, opening possibilities to architects and building developers they have never imagined possible.
MULTI is based on the concept of ThyssenKrupp TWIN’s control system and safety features, but includes new features such as new and lightweight materials for cabins and doors, resulting in a 50% weight reduction as compared to standard elevators, as well as a new linear drive – using one motor for horizontal and vertical movements.
Commenting on this momentous breakthrough in the company’s history of innovations at the global headquarters of ThyssenKrupp in Essen, Germany, Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG said, “As the nature of building constructions evolve, it is also necessary to adapt elevator systems to better suit the requirements of buildings and high volumes of passengers. From the one dimensional vertical arrangement to a two dimensional horizontal/vertical arrangement with more than one or two cabins operating in each shaft, MULTI represents a proud moment in ThyssenKrupp’s history of presenting cutting-edge transport technologies that best serve current mobility needs”.
Operating on the basic premise of a circular system, such as a paternoster, MULTI consists of various cabins running in a loop at a targeted speed of 5 m/s, enabling passengers to have near-constant access to an elevator cabin every 15 to 30 seconds, with a transfer stop every 50 metres.
Schierenbeck said, "Per year, New York City office workers spend a cumulative amount of 16.6 years waiting for elevators, and 5.9 years in the elevators. This data provides how imperative it is to increase the availability of elevators."
A 2013 analysis of two-dimensional elevator traffic systems likens the present use of one cabin per elevator shaft to using an entire railway line between two cites to operate a single train – clearly a waste of resources. By combining groundbreaking technology with a simple operation concept and convenience of passenger use, ThyssenKrupp’s MULTI will transform the idea of a flexible number of cars per shaft from a distant vision for the future into a reality.
“To get this groundbreaking product onto the market our new test tower in Rottweil, Germany, provides the perfect test and certification environment. The tower is set to be completed at the end of 2016, and by this time, we aim to have a running prototype of MULTI”, Schierenbeck adds.

Urbanisation is an unstoppable trend, and the scale of movement of people to cities has redefined the construction and infrastructure requirements needed to keep pace with growing urban populations. An estimated additional 85% of the existing urban and commercial floor space will need to be developed by 2025, according to a 2012 McKinsey Global Institute report, which foresees a need of nearly 58 trillion euros in new construction to meet this requirement. Limitations on space in urban areas means that mid to high-rise buildings are the most viable construction options, translating into an immense demand for elevators. By 2016, the global demand for elevator equipment (including elevators, escalators, and moving walkways) and services is projected to rise over 5% annually to 52 billion euros.
The Elevator Technology business area brings together the ThyssenKrupp Group’s global activities in passenger transportation systems. With sales of 6.4 billion euros in fiscal 2013/2014 and customers in 150 countries, ThyssenKrupp Elevator is one of the world’s leading elevator companies. With more than 50,000 highly skilled employees, the company offers innovative and energy-efficient products designed to meet customers’ individual requirements. The portfolio includes passenger and freight elevators, escalators and moving walks, passenger boarding bridges, stair and platform lifts as well as tailored service solutions for all products. Over 900 locations around the world provide an extensive sales and service network to guarantee closeness to customers.

ThyssenKrupp develops the world’s first rope-free elevator system to enable the building industry face the challenges of global urbanization
The era of the rope-dependent elevator is now over, 160 years after its invention.

The world’s first rope free elevator system - HOW ITS WORKS
thyssenkrupp develops ‘multi’, the world’s first rope-free elevator system which moves cabins vertically and horizontally in a perpendicular metro-like structure. enabling linear motors to lift compartments prepares the building industry with the challenge faced by global urbanization because the technology permits tower constructions of different heights, shapes and purposes. using no cables and just a multi-level brake set-up, inductive power transfers from the shaft to the box to provide the needed propulsion. the first ‘MULTI’ unit will be in trial by 2016, in the company’s test tower in rottweil, germany.
applying the linear motor technology of the magnetic levitation train transrapid to the elevator industry means it will operate in a similar manner to a metro system as ‘MULTI’ incorporates various cabins per shaft, running in a loop. it aims to increase the tube transport capacity by up to 50% with a continuous flow speed of 5m/s and cabin arrivals every 15-30 seconds, whilst offering significant extra space to the architects as the compartments won’t need to be as big. current elevator-escalator footprints can occupy up to 40% of a building’s floor space meaning constructions ideally above 300m in height, will have new design possibilities.

http://www.itmedia.co.jp/smartjapan/articles/1305/20/news031.html

http://www.itmedia.co.jp/smartjapan/articles/1305/20/news031.html

Pendulum power: Innovative pendulum-dynamo for converting tidal energy into electrical power
Okayama University's Shinji Hiejima is looking for industrial partners to commercialize his experimentally proven and patented concept of the Hydro-VENUS system for converting tidal energy into electrical power.
Research on converting tidal energy into electricity energy has a long history with the European Marine Energy Centre, in Scotland being one of the major international hubs for testing ideas on extracting energy from the motion of seas and tidal currents. In Japan the search for energy resources is a high priority with research on exploiting the power of the seas surrounding the Japanese archipelago being actively pursued. Notably, a report published by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in 2010 states that the potential of tidal energy in Japan is equivalent to 20 nuclear power plants. Furthermore, the Seto Inland Sea—where Okayama University is located—has been assessed as being a site with especially high potential.
"I want to exploit the mechanical motion of a pendulum to generate electricity from tidal currents," says Shinji Hiejima, an associate professor at the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science of Okayama University. Hiejima was born in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, famous for its Kintaikyo Bridge.
"My fascination with the structure of bridges triggered my research on the interaction of strong winds with massive bridges such as the Seto Bridge that connects Okayama with Kagawa in Shikoku," says Hiejima. "In my early research I analyzed why large bridges oscillate when hit by strong winds such as typhoons. Now, I am focusing on harnessing tidal energy as a stable source of electricity. I am looking for partners to develop my ideas on the Hydrokinetic Vortex Energy Utilization System or Hydro-VENUS—a large underwater pendulum based system."
Hiejima points out that propeller type turbine systems being tested in Europe has three major drawbacks: High strength required for the materials used for making the rotor blades leads to increases in cost; waste in the ocean clogs up and damages rotors; and, fisherman consider the sharp edges of rotor blades to be harmful to marine life.
To resolve these limitations of propeller based tidal energy conversion, Hiejima began by analyzing the potential of power generated by flow induced vibrations of cylinders placed horizontally in water. This approach overcomes aforementioned shortcomings of propeller but the vortex induced vibrations—the cylinder moves translationally as waves moves across them—in these systems typically only yields a power efficiency of approximately 37% of so-clled VIVACE converter obtained in the experiments of a group in the USA.
"The translational motion of cylinders (such as used in VIVACE) limits the efficiency of tidal flow induced vibrations of cylinders," says Hiejima. "My concept for the Hydro-VENUS shown in Fig.1 does not vibrate translationally but rotationally, and initial tests yielded a power efficiency of 76% as shown in Fig.2." Early tests were carried out using 1.5 m cylinders as shown in Fig. 3. Hiejima is now developing 20 m cylinders from a wide range of materials with the goal of producing highly efficient structures.
"I have patented and demonstrated the potential for my version of a pendulum-dynamo," says Hiejima. "I am looking for industrial partners to commercialize it."
