Farm Africa is helping farmers in Uganda improve their harvests so they have enough food to eat.

In Central Uganda nine out of ten families rely on the their land for survival, so poor harvests can be catastrophic. Farming here isn't easy - plant diseases are rife and can destroy entire crops, leaving families without enough food to eat. Farm Africa is working with local farmers' groups to set up demonstration plots, where members of the group learn how to grow bigger harvests using good quality, disease resistant seeds and more modern farming methods. The farmers can use their new skills on their own land to grow more food.

In this film we meet Joyce, the chair person of the Nakasongola district farmers' group. Joyce shows us around her group's demo plots where we see what a huge difference they have made to her community.

Evergreen Agriculture: Solving Hunger in Africa

公開日: 2012/04/19
Hunger in Africa is not a fatality! All African farmers need are appropriate techniques that raise yields, protect the soil against heavy rain or harsh sunlight, and build up its life-giving biomass. Agroforestry, trees on farms, evergreen agriculture are the "open sesame" to greater food security.

African Human Development Report 2012

公開日: 2012/05/15
Sub-Saharan Africa cannot sustain its present economic resurgence unless it eliminates the hunger that affects nearly a quarter of its people, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) argues in the African Human Development Report 2012: Towards a Food Secure Future, the first report of its kind on the state of the continent of Africa.

"Impressive GDP growth rates in Africa have not translated into the elimination of hunger and malnutrition. Inclusive growth and people-centred approaches to food security are needed," said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark at the launch today, attended by Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki.

Arguing that action focused on agriculture alone will not end food insecurity either, the Report calls for new approaches covering multiple sectors; from rural infrastructure to health services, to new forms of social protection and empowering local communities. Ensuring that the poor and vulnerable have greater voice through strengthened local government and civil society groups is also needed to ensure food security for all.

The quickening pace of change and new economic vitality on the continent make this an opportune time for action, the Report says.

"It is a harsh paradox that in a world of food surpluses, hunger and malnutrition remain pervasive on a continent with ample agricultural endowments," says Tegegnework Gettu, Director of UNDP's Africa Bureau.

Horn of Africa Hunger Crisis

公開日: 2012/07/23
Drought in the Horn of Africa, coupled with conflict in Somalia, has affected over 13 million people. As I began researching the topic I learned how devastating it really is and I am trying to bring a small change into this world. Whether it be feeding 1 family or 100 families the choice is up to you to decide. To try to grasp the devastation our food crisis is at right now a few facts might help:

Hunger is the biggest health risk currently in the world. Larger than AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis combined.

One in seven people go to bed hungry each night

One in four children in developing countries are underweight

There are more hungry people in the world than the population of the USA, Canada, and the Europe Union combined.

Undernutrition contributes to five million deaths of children under five each year in developing countries.

Though as devastating as these facts are with your financial support we could help not all of them but as many as possible. Thank your for your effort, time and donations.
