Organic Chemistry (1/3) - Alkanes, Alkenes & Alkynes

Organic chemistry is the study of Carbon compounds. Hydrocarbons can have only single bonds (Alkanes) or can have double bonds (Alkenes) or triple bonds (Alkynes). This forms the basis for the naming of organic compounds, as does the number of Carbon atoms. A structural isomer is a hydrocarbon with the same molecular formula but different structure & therefore properties.

The size of a Hydrocarbon affects its properties. The longer it is the higher its boiling point and viscosity and the lower its volatility. Hydrocarbons can undergo combustion reactions, substitution reactions and addition reactions.
